Happiness Habits

Constant bombardment of negative or unhappy happenings on social media, print media and news broadcasts on whatever medium can have an effect on individuals’ happiness- it can be hard to not be impacted by many Global and National events. However it is important to note that you and only you can be in charge of your state of being.

Consider this scenario – you are at a major show, and see people on a frightening roller-coaster, you can hear screams, and look at faces whizzing by not knowing whether the screams are screams of dread or glee.   These two emotions are very similar even though they are on the opposite ends of an emotional scale.

We, and we alone are responsible for our state of mind, we can switch on a happiness switch and change our emotional state in just seconds – HOW!

By finding something that brings you joy! Whether that looking at the Ocean, listening to the good news, calling someone you feel close to, watching a hilarious movie and so much more. You can choose to be happy, choose to be sad, choose to be morose or full of joy.

Of course – Life can throw many disturbing curve balls including death, destruction, break-ups, job-loss and so much more, when these events happen it is important to “feel the feeling” of that emotion and sit with it for some time – because if you “shove the feeling aside” it can manifest in an illness. This has been proven scientifically. It’s not whoo whoo but a fact.

If you have had a bad experience at work, take yourself away from the environment, listen to a song that makes you happy, or gives you a sense of calm. Call a friend that lifts your spirits and understand that all emotions and feeling are temporary. I have found that when working with individuals to allow themselves to feel the feelings and observe those feeling can have a profound effect on them. As I say, everything is temporary, its happening here and now, this second, this minute, this day can never exist again so understand that it is temporary.

Creating Happiness Habits are not difficult you could

Think of a song that lifts your spirits for me that Pharell Williams “Cause I’m happy”

Think of a special event that has happened in your life and go back and feel the feelings you felt at that time. Feel the feeling in your entire body of how you felt back then. Re-live that event, and when you are feeling those feeling just imaging turning the dial up.

Do something physical that releases your happy hormones -endorphins.

Go for a walk in a beautiful environment or an environment that makes you happy, if that’s a shopping Centre than go there, if it’s a park visit the park.

Take 5 minutes out of your day and do square breathing – what this is , is an equal amount of time breathing in, holding your full breath for an equal amount of time, releasing for the same amount of time and then holding an empty breath for that same equal amount of time, be that 5 second/10 seconds/15 second or more. This will calm down your nervous system and bring about a state of calm.

OR

You can block off your right nostril and simply breath in an out of your left nostril.

Remember, to tell yourself that this situation is only temporary.
