In the past two decades, scientists and neurologists have made fascinating inroads into understanding the mind. When we say the mind, we look at both the conscious and the subconscious mind. What is known and accepted is that we operate with our conscious mind only 10% of the time.
Now, I can hear you thinking or saying out loud, “Are you serious?” To understand better what I am talking about, tomorrow morning try the following exercise which will be operated by your conscious mind.
Using your conscious mind
In the first two hours of your day, use your non-dominant hand for everything that you unconsciously do with your dominant hand. So, if you are right-handed use your left hand; likewise, if you are left-handed use your right hand to perform all duties that you would use your dominant hand for, for example:
- dressing/undressing
- brushing your teeth
- washing your body and hair
- brushing your hair
- putting on deodorant, make-up, perfume, aftershave
- shaving
- buttering your toast
- holding your knife/fork
- using your mobile/remote control
So, now you understand just how many things you do unconsciously. By using your nondominant hand for a few hours you will fire off neurons. This is a short demonstrating on neuroplasticity and how you can make changes to your brain by firing off neurons by using your conscious mind to do things you would generally do unconsciously.
Your subconscious mind
Your subconscious mind is your body’s engine; it beats your heart, circulates your blood, calculates the distance of your steps to the pavement/ground and digests your food. Not only does it operate your body, it is the keeper of all of your memories and the creator of your emotions. It’s a storehouse of information and performs some very important role. Among its many other actions, your mind:
- Leads you towards pleasure and away from pain; it’s there to protect you.
- Loves what’s familiar; that’s why habits are hard to break.
- Does what it thinks you want it to do, based on the words you speak regularly and the pictures you create in your head.
Friend or foe?
Your mind really can be either. It all depends on what you say to yourself. You repeat patterns, we all do: you reduce your weight, you put it back on again, the cycle is repeated. You give up a habit, you go back to that habit, the cycle is repeated. Why? Because your mind loves what is familiar. Your mind is there to keep you alive and keep you happy.
So, why can’t you change what you want to change?
In a nutshell, you are speaking to your conscious mind which is not the keeper of your memories or your emotions. To change you need to speak to your subconscious mind.
- Your subconscious mind is amazing to say the least. The good news is that through hypnosis you can communicate directly with your subconscious mind. Remember, it is the keeper of all of your memories.
- Unconscious mind communicates with your subconscious.
